Thieves Launch New Portable Tetra Pak Wines for Summer

Four Varieties of Bandits Now in Smaller, Eco-Friendly 500ml Packaging
Bandit logo ST. HELENA, CA, May 7, 2009 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- Out on the trail or down in the ‘hood, bandits come in every shape and size— and now with the introduction of the Bandit 500ml package, so does the Three Thieves’ fast-growing line of premium-quality, value-priced wines in convenient, environmentally friendly Tetra Pak containers. Taking their place alongside the one liter, the 500ml package offers consumers yet another way to match their enjoyment of wine with just about any time, place and circumstance— from the dining table to the camping trip.

"No bottle, no opener, 96% wine, 4% packaging; and less energy use," says Thief Charles Bieler. "It’s packaging for every occasion, and for a green planet."

This form of aseptic packaging is widely used in the food and beverage industry but was absent from the US wine market until the Thieves decided to shake things up in 2002. The Bandit packaging is made of Tetra Prisma™, which is comprised of 70% paper, a renewable resource, thus reducing the packaging waste associated with bottled wine by 90%. It is far more efficient and lightweight to transport than bottles, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and saving fuel. In fact, it would take 26 trucks filled with empty wine bottles to equal just 1 truck filled with empty Tetra Pak cartons.

And wine in Tetra Paks is no longer a novelty entry — it’s a fast-rising category, growing faster than table wine as a whole, faster than box wine, up a remarkable 47.6% in the last six months, according to Nielsen figures.

The Thieves are just as serious about their winemaking as they are about their packaging. The Bandit 500ml line offers four award-winning wines that are carefully crafted by fellow thief Joel Gott and his winemaking team and made from premium California grapes— Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Pinot Grigio. The wines have a suggested retail price of $4.50 per 500ml container, and are now going into national distribution.
