Miami-Dade Parks and Recreation Participated in the 24th Annual International Coastal Cleanup
MIRAMAR, Fla., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- (WORLD-WIRE) Association Services of Florida employee Jessica Lindley and her mother volunteered at the local Miami-Dade Parks and Recreational volunteer efforts in support of the 24th Annual International Coastal Cleanup. Volunteers around the country hit beaches, lakes, rivers and waterways to help get rid of marine debris – this is the largest volunteer effort of its kind. Ms. Lindley, her mother and over 80 other volunteers showed up to Haulover Beach and Marina on a gloomy, typical South Florida morning to help with the clean up. Volunteers were from school groups, church groups, families and individuals that wanted to make a difference. What they found were shorelines littered with Styrofoam, bottle caps, plastic bags, hygiene items, various paraphernalia, car parts and much more. “When we got there, you could see the trash and debris collected on the shore line. It was really heartbreaking,” said Ms. Lindley. “But by the time we were done, the clouds started to clear and the waters started to splash. It was almost as if they were saying thank you.” "Trash littering our beaches and choking our ecosystems is a threat to wildlife, our coastal economies, and ultimately to the ability of the ocean to sustain us," said Vikki Spruill President and CEO of Ocean Conservancy. "The Cleanup gives everyone a chance to work in their backyards and be a part of this special movement to protect our ocean. Trash doesn't fall from the sky, it falls from our hands, and what falls from human hands can be prevented." Ocean Conservancy is the world's foremost advocate for the oceans. Through science-based advocacy, research, and public education, we inform, inspire and empower people to speak and act for the oceans. Ocean Conservancy is headquartered in Washington, DC, and has offices in Florida, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Pacific, with support from more than half a million members and volunteers.
