Everything You Need to Know About Freedom Rally to Save NC and America

The United States is a federal republic whose people benefit from a vibrant political system, a strong rule-of-law tradition, robust freedoms of expression and religious belief, and a wide array of other civil liberties.

However, in recent years its democratic institutions have suffered erosion, as reflected in partisan pressure on the electoral process, bias and dysfunction in the criminal justice system, harmful policies on immigration and asylum seekers, and growing disparities in wealth, economic opportunity, and political influence.

Know the Guest Speaker

David Madison Cawthorn is an American politician serving as the U.S. representative for North Carolina’s 11th congressional district. A member of the Republican Party, Cawthorn was elected to Congress in 2020. He is the youngest member of Congress since Jed Johnson Jr. and the firstborn in the 1990s.

Cawthorn was born on August 1, 1995, in Asheville, North Carolina, to Priscilla and Roger Cawthorn. He was home-schooled in Hendersonville, North Carolina, and played football in high school. As a teenager, he worked at a Chick-fil-A restaurant.

From January 2015 to August 2016, Cawthorn worked as a staff assistant in Representative Mark Meadows’s district office. He told the Asheville Citizen-Times he worked there “full-time”, but it was a part-time role.

Cawthorn describes himself as a Christian and a constitutional conservative. He is married to Cristina Cawthorn (née Bayardelle), a college student and competitive CrossFit athlete. He has an older brother, Zachary. Cawthorn trains in wheelchair racing. He has said he had trained for the 2020 Summer Paralympics, but has never competed at a qualifying level and is not involved in a team. In April 2021, Cawthorn married Bayardelle in a private ceremony, but they have been legally married since December 2020.

Cawthorn’s Political Position

In the March 2020 Republican primary for North Carolina’s 11th congressional district, Cawthorn finished second behind Lynda Bennett, who had been endorsed both by President Donald Trump and Cawthorn’s former mentor, Meadows, who had become White House Chief of Staff. But Bennett did not receive the required 30% of the vote to avoid a runoff and Cawthorn won the June runoff overwhelmingly. He was supported by many local leaders and endorsed by Mark Walker, the vice-chairman of the House Republican Conference. His victory has been called an upset. Cawthorn benefited from false and misleading claims that Bennett was a “Never-Trumper”.

Cawthorn is the youngest Republican and one of the youngest members ever elected to the House of Representatives. He has said that he would “like to be the face of the Republican Party when it comes to health care.”

The Event

The event will include speakers, food trucks, and music, according to the organizer, hoisting signs and swinging American flags for a “Rally for Freedom.

“The things that we are wanting to fight for, it doesn’t matter if our votes don’t count because you know if our election systems continue to be rigged and continue to be stolen then it’s going to lead to one place and that’s bloodshed,” the Western North Carolina representative said during one of the sections of his speech that is receiving national attention.

Those who participated said the event was a chance to demonstrate their freedoms and be among others who shared their beliefs, namely their opposition to coronavirus restrictions and, in some cases, denial of information regarding masks and other elements of the pandemic.

“I will tell you as much as I am willing to defend our liberty at all costs,” he continues, “There is nothing that I would dread doing more than having to pick up arms against a fellow American.”

At one point during his speech, one of Cawthorn’s supporters seemed to allude to January 6: a day that started with a crowd of Trump supporters protesting the 2020 election results that later turned into a violent takeover of the U.S. Capitol.

Cawthorn also spoke at the Jan. 6 Trump rally before a mob of the president’s supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, again baselessly alleging fraud and extolling the crowd’s courage in comparison with the “cowards” in Congress. He returned to the Capitol, where he falsely claimed that insurrectionists had been “paid by the Democratic machine.”

Johnston County, located hundreds of miles from Cawthorn’s Western North Carolina Congressional district. But the controversial congressman has spoken against mask mandates in multiple school districts.

At an August Buncombe County school board meeting, Cawthorn called it “psychological child abuse” to require students to wear masks, The News & Observer previously reported. Also during that meeting, some parents “overthrew” the current school board and instated themselves into the positions.

Some critics of North Carolina Representative Madison Cawthorn (R) are accusing him of trying to incite another insurrection.

It stems from a speech the congressman made over the weekend at a Macon County GOP event. Cawthorn’s speech put a lot of focus on unfounded claims of election fraud. At one point, Rep. Cawthorn called the people facing charges for the Jan. 6 insurrection “political prisoners.”

Freedom lacking in America

The United States has a free and diverse press, operating under some of the strongest constitutional protections in the world. The media environment retains a high degree of pluralism, with newspapers, news magazines, traditional broadcasters, cable television networks, and news websites competing for readers and audiences. Internet access is widespread and unrestricted.

While many larger outlets have prospered, however, independent local sources of news have struggled to keep up with technology-driven changes in news consumption and advertising, contributing to significant ownership consolidation in some sectors, and a number of communities with just one or no local news outlet. News coverage has also grown more polarized, with certain outlets and their star commentators providing a consistently right- or left-leaning perspective.

The cable network Fox News, in particular, grew unusually close to the Trump administration; several prominent on-air personalities and executives migrated to government jobs beginning in 2017, and key hosts openly endorsed Republican candidates or participated in campaign rallies. Following the 2020 elections, however, Fox joined other networks in calling the presidential race for Biden, and Trump subsequently denigrated the outlet, directing his followers to smaller, more extreme channels that fully endorsed his attempts to overturn the election results.

In 2020, multiple state and local governments imposed restrictions on the size of religious gatherings to slow the spread of the coronavirus, prompting legal challenges. The Supreme Court issued somewhat conflicting rulings on the subject, though the restrictions in question differed in their details: in May and July the justices upheld attendance limits in California and Nevada, respectively, but in November the court—with a newly appointed justice reinforcing the conservative majority—struck down a New York order that strictly capped the number of congregants allowed to attend religious services in high-risk areas.

A public debate about law enforcement access to encrypted communication services continues, with some officials warning that their technical inability to break encryption even with a judicial warrant posed a threat to the rule of law, and opponents arguing that any weakening of encrypted services’ security would expose all users to criminal hacking and other ill effects.

Aside from concerns about government surveillance, internet users in the United States have faced problems such as aggressive disinformation efforts, intimidation, and frequently sexualized harassment on social media that may deter them from engaging in online discussion and expressing their views freely.
