Ricketts was born on August 19, 1964, and is 57 years of age. He was born in Nebraska City to Joe Ricketts and Marlene Ricketts and is the oldest of four siblings. His father is the founder of TD Ameritrade, an electronic trading platform. Ricketts is married to Susanne Shore and has 3 children. The two tied the knot in 1997. The shore is a committed advocate for child welfare and has served on the board of the Child Saving Institute and the Nebraska Families Cooperative. She has also previously worked as a nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Ricketts is a Roman Catholic and is a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Ricketts was born in Nebraska City and later moved to Omaha where his mother worked as a teacher and his father founded the First Omaha Securities in 1975. Ricketts and his siblings all went to Westside High School in Omaha, where Ricketts graduated in 1982. He received a bachelor’s degree in arts, majoring in biology, from the University of Chicago in 1986. Ricketts also received an MBA in marketing and finance in 1991.

Ricketts returned to Omaha after college and worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for a year, and then as a salesman for an environmental consultant. He eventually joined his father’s business, in 1993, in the call center for the initial months, and was later appointed to a number of executive positions. He subsequently became the Chief Operating Officer in 2006. 

Ricketts left Ameritrade to run for the U.S Senate in 2006 but was defeated by Ben Nelson. 

He became one of the board directors along with his 3 siblings, of the Chicago Cubs when the Ricketts family bought the team in 2009. Ricketts has held this position to date.

Ricketts ran for the Nebraska Governor Election in 2014 and won the primary in May 2014 with 26% of the vote. He was elected as the Governor of Nebraska when he won the general election with 57% of the total votes. Ricketts was reelected on November 6 with 59% of the vote and has held office to date.
