Jones’ relation with the event

On April 14, 2020, Jones became the first state elected Democratic official in Georgia to endorse President Donald Trump’s re-election bid. Jones said he had no plans to switch political parties and gave his reasons for the endorsement by saying “It’s very simple to me. President Trump’s handling of the economy, his support for historically black colleges and his criminal justice initiatives drew me to endorse his campaign.” Due to backlash from his endorsement of Trump, he announced his resignation from the Georgia House of Representatives on April 22, 2020. On April 23, 2020, Jones announced on his Twitter account that he was in fact not resigning.

On August 24, 2020, Jones addressed the 2020 Republican National Convention and reiterated his endorsement of Trump.[48] On October 16, 2020, Jones spoke at a Trump rally in Macon, Georgia and the crowd surfed afterwards, which drew criticism as it occurred in the middle of a pandemic with a mostly maskless crowd.[49]

Jones said that the election in Georgia has been “tainted” after the 2020 United States presidential election.

Jones withdrew his bid for re-election in 2020 and his term ended on January 11, 2021. On January 6, 2021, he attended the rally that occurred that day in Washington D.C. where he spoke to the crowd, stating that he stands “firm for President Donald J. Trump” and “they don’t know they have awakened a sleeping giant.” He then again announced that he was changing his party affiliation from Democrat to Republican amid cheers from the audience.

Trump had dissed US president Joe Biden’s performance as a “catastrophe” and criticised the current administration for the crime wave in major cities throughout the United States, the migrant crisis at the southern border with Mexico, and a dismal economic situation marred with high inflation.

“They’ve mobilized every power of government to come after me, my family, my wonderful employees, and my company solely because of politics,” Trump told the crowd gathered at the rally.- Donald Trump

Jones boasted before supporters that he would beat prominent Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams, who has not officially launched a campaign for governor, in a potential general election matchup.

Before formally announcing his insurgent campaign, Jones, who is one of the former president’s most prominent Black supporters, was teasing a run for governor for weeks.

Vernon Jones, a Georgia lawmaker from DeKalb County, was one of the warm-up acts for President Donald Trump at Wednesday’s protest in Washington D.C.

Jones endorsed Trump almost a year ago to the day while he was still serving as a Democratic representative in the Georgia General Assembly, drawing immediate backlash from his party. Since then, he’s stood staunchly behind the former president, including Trump’s baseless claims that rampant election fraud cost him the 2020 election — an assertion that was disputed by federal and state officials, including Georgia’s elections chief, Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

Jones helped perpetuate election falsehoods and claimed Trump would still be president if it weren’t for Kemp. Even if Jones nabs Trump’s endorsement, he likely faces an uphill battle to defeat Kemp, who has secured recent political wins he’ll surely tout on the campaign trail.

Calling Trump a “fighter” at his announcement event, Jones told the crowd that the former president “sends his regards” to Georgia. He also made clear he supports an “America First” agenda, leaning into his support for Trump in the hopes of earning the backing of his conservative base in the Republican primary.
