How to Read a Press Release Distribution Report (DR, Traffic, Links)

Learn to read a press release distribution report, from DR and traffic estimates to live links and CSV export, using a real 357-placement World Wire sample.

A press release distribution report is the record of where your release was published: each outlet, its live URL and the numbers that describe that outlet. Reading it well tells you what you actually got for your money and what to do next. Every World Wire release, from the $14 Basic package up, comes with a live web report showing each URL, its Domain Rating (DR), a monthly traffic estimate and audience countries, plus CSV export.

Key takeaways
  • A press release distribution report lists each outlet that published your release, with its live URL.
  • Domain Rating estimates a site's backlink strength on a 0 to 100 scale; traffic is an estimate of the whole domain, not your page.
  • The World Wire Basic sample report shows 357 live placements, about 7.9M combined reach and a top DR of 82.
  • Link type depends on the package: UltraSEO is 100% dofollow, while single premium outlets are nofollow.
  • A live URL still needs to be indexed before it can rank, pass signals or be cited by AI answer engines.

What a press release distribution report shows

A World Wire report is a live page on world-wire.com. For each outlet that published your release, it lists:

  • Outlet name and the live URL of your release on that site.
  • Domain Rating (DR) for the outlet's domain.
  • Monthly traffic estimate for the domain.
  • Audience countries, showing where the outlet's readers are based.

At the report level you can download a CSV or use "copy all URLs" to grab every link at once. The report updates as placements go live, so it is worth checking more than once in the first day.

A live link is a placement that a publisher has published and that you can open today. A pending placement is one that has not gone live yet. Publishers do not all publish at once, and some take up to 24 hours, so a report fills in over the first day.

When you review a report:

  1. Wait at least 24 hours before judging the total.
  2. Open a sample of URLs to confirm they load and contain your release.
  3. Compare the live count with the package's network size. A network figure such as "400+ publishers" describes the package; the live count is what your release achieved.

Domain Rating: what it measures and what it does not

Domain Rating is a metric from Ahrefs that scores a website's backlink profile from 0 to 100 on a logarithmic scale. A DR 92 site such as AP News or USA Today has a far stronger link profile than a DR 40 local site, and the gap between 80 and 90 is much larger than between 30 and 40.

Use DR as a quick signal of how established an outlet is. Do not treat it as a Google score, a traffic figure or a guarantee that a link will help rankings. A relevant DR 50 trade site can be more useful to you than an unrelated DR 80 site.

Look at both the top DR and the spread. World Wire's Basic package has a top DR of 82 with an average around 45. UltraSEO also tops out at DR 82 but averages about 52, and WW Platinum reaches DR 94.

Monthly traffic estimates and "reach"

Each outlet's traffic figure is a third-party estimate of how many visits the whole domain receives per month. Combined reach adds those estimates across the outlets that published your release.

This is the most misunderstood number in any press release distribution report. It does not mean that many people read your release. Your page is one of many on each site. Treat reach as a way to compare the size and quality of outlet sets, not as readership.

Audience countries

Audience countries show where each outlet's readers are concentrated. Use them to check fit. A US product launch benefits from outlets with US audiences, while a release aimed at India belongs in packages such as Hindi Wire or WW T-20. If the countries in your report do not match your market, choose a different package next time.

Nofollow vs dofollow in your report

A dofollow link is a normal link that can pass ranking signals. A nofollow link tells search engines not to treat it as an endorsement. Link type depends on the package and the publisher:

PackageLink type
BasicMixed link types, 0 to 2 backlinks
UltraSEO100% dofollow
WW Platinum2 to 3 backlinks
Single premium outlets (USA Today, AP News, Barchart, StreetInsider)Nofollow
PodcastMany dofollow links

To check a specific link, open the page, right-click the link and inspect it. A rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored" attribute means it is qualified; no attribute means dofollow. Whatever the type, keep anchors branded, since Google treats optimized anchor text in distributed press releases as link spam.

Worked examples: four real sample reports

World Wire publishes real sample reports you can open and explore.

Sample reportLive placementsCombined reachWhat stands out
Basic357About 7.9MTop DR 82, broad local news syndication
UltraSEO230About 17MEvery placement dofollow
WW Platinum523About 220MAP News (DR 92), USA Today (DR 92), Benzinga, Barchart, The Globe and Mail
Podcast169Not applicableSpotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, iHeartRadio, Amazon Music

Reading the Basic sample. 357 live placements against a 400+ publisher network is the normal gap between network size and one release's result. With about 7.9M combined reach, the value is breadth: many indexed local news pages naming your brand.

Reading the WW Platinum sample. About 220M reach sounds huge, but look at where it comes from. Using the figures World Wire lists for USA Today (86M+ monthly visits) and AP News (76M+), those two domains alone account for well over half. The other 500+ placements add breadth and backlinks rather than most of the reach.

Reading the UltraSEO sample. 230 placements and about 17M reach is smaller than Platinum, but every link is dofollow. This is the report to study if links are your goal, and the one where indexing matters most.

Exporting: CSV and copy all URLs

Export is where a report becomes useful. Use the CSV to:

  • Track which URLs get indexed over the following weeks.
  • Sort by DR or traffic to find your strongest placements.
  • Build an "In the news" page linking your best coverage.
  • Share results with a client. Agencies on reseller tiers from 250 credits can unlock unbranded (white-label) reports.

How indexing fits into the report

A live URL is proof of publication, not proof of visibility. Syndicated pages on small news sites often sit uncrawled for weeks, and a page that is not indexed cannot rank, pass any link signal or be cited by AI answer engines.

World Wire's "Indexing for all links" add-on costs $3.90 per package. As each placement in your report goes live, World Wire submits that URL to an indexing service so search engines discover and crawl it faster, including placements that appear later. It does not guarantee indexing, but it turns a report full of URLs into discoverable coverage. Our guide on how to get your press release indexed on Google explains the process.

Bottom line

A good press release distribution report lets you verify every placement, judge outlet quality with DR and traffic, check audience fit and export the data for follow-up. Read reach as outlet size, not readership, and make sure your live links get indexed. Open the sample reports to explore real data, then compare packages on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

What should a press release distribution report include?

At minimum, each outlet that published the release and its live URL. Better reports add Domain Rating, a monthly traffic estimate, audience countries and an export option so you can verify and reuse the data.

Does the traffic number mean people read my release?

No. Traffic figures are third-party estimates of each domain's monthly visits, not views of your specific page. Treat combined reach as a measure of the outlets' size, not your readership.

What is Domain Rating?

Domain Rating (DR) is a 0 to 100 score from Ahrefs that estimates the strength of a website's backlink profile. Higher DR sites tend to be more established, but DR is not a Google metric.

Why do some placements appear in the report later?

Publishers do not all go live at once, and some take up to 24 hours. World Wire's report updates as each new placement goes live.

Can I export my World Wire report?

Yes. Every World Wire report offers a CSV download and a copy all URLs button, so you can check links, track indexing or share results with a client.
