Beck was born in Everett, Washington, to Mary Clara (née Janssen) and William Beck, who resided in Mountlake Terrace, Washington, during his birth. The family later moved to Mount Vernon, Washington, where they owned a downtown bakery. Beck’s ancestors were German immigrants who arrived in the United States in the 19th century. He was raised as a Roman Catholic and attended Immaculate Conception Catholic School in Mount Vernon. Beck and his sister relocated to Sumner, Washington, where they attended a Jesuit school in Puyallup after their mother moved there.
