Glenn Carano Biography

Glenn Carano, a former American football quarterback, was born on November 18, 1955. He played in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys for seven seasons and had a stint with the Pittsburgh Maulers in the United States Football League (USFL). Carano attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), where he played college football. He is General Manager at Eldorado Resorts properties, overseeing Circus Circus, Eldorado, and Silver Legacy Resort & Casino.

Carano was born in San Pedro, California, and graduated from Earl Wooster High School in Reno, Nevada, in 1973. He received high school All-American honors during his senior year. Carano earned a football scholarship to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, where he became a four-year starting quarterback for the Rebels. In his freshman year in 1973, under the guidance of first-year head coach Ron Meyer, Carano was named the starting quarterback. As a sophomore in 1974, he played a crucial role in UNLV, achieving a remarkable number two ranking in Division II, culminating in their sole undefeated regular season.

In the 1975 NFL Draft, Carano was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round. He spent his rookie season on the Cowboys’ practice squad but was promoted to the active roster in 1976. Carano played in seven games that year, completing 22 of 43 passes for 293 yards and one touchdown. He also showcased his running ability, accumulating 117 yards on 32 carries.

In 1977, Carano became the backup quarterback for the Cowboys, serving as Roger Staubach’s understudy. He played in eight games, completing 24 of 45 passes for 276 yards and one touchdown. Carano also rushed for 125 yards on 36 carries.

Following Staubach’s retirement in 1978, Carano was named the Cowboys’ starting quarterback. He started 11 games that season, completing 142 of 261 passes for 1,771 yards and 10 touchdowns. Carano also displayed his mobility, rushing for 335 yards on 90 carries.

However, Carano’s time as the Cowboys’ starter was short-lived, as he was replaced by Danny White in 1979. He played in nine games that year, completing 92 of 175 passes for 1,038 yards and five touchdowns. Carano also contributed with his rushing ability, gaining 172 yards on 47 carries.

1980 Carano joined the Pittsburgh Maulers of the USFL after being traded from the Cowboys. He started 10 games for the Maulers, completing 136 of 242 passes for 1,735 yards and 12 touchdowns. Additionally, Carano showcased his running skills, amassing 233 yards on 71 carries.

After the Maulers folded following the 1980 season, Carano was released. He briefly returned to the Cowboys in 1981 but was released before the regular season commenced. Carano then signed with the New Orleans Saints but, once again, was released before the season started.

Carano retired from professional football in 1981 and transitioned to the business world. He currently holds the position of General Manager at Eldorado Resorts, overseeing properties such as Circus Circus, Eldorado, and Silver Legacy Resort & Casino.
