Henry McMaster (full name Henry Dargan McMaster)  is an American politician and attorney. He is also a prominent member of the Republican Party of the USA. He was appointed the 117th governor of South Carolina and has been in service since January 24, 2017. He has been practicing privately and as a federal prosecutor.  The Appointment was carried out by  President Ronald Reagan in 1981 as the  United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina. 

Henry McMaster’s Education

Henry McMaster attended the University of South Carolina in 1969 and pursued a bachelor’s degree in history. He graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in the year 1973 where he served on the editorial board of the publication of  South Carolina Law Review. In the same year of 1973, he got himself enrolled with the Richland County Bar Association of the South Carolina Bar. 

Henry McMaster’s Career

Henry McMaster initially served in The United States Army reserves and left after receiving an honorary discharge in the year 1975.  After graduating from law school, he started working as a legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond in Washington, D.C. In the year 1974, he joined the firm of Tompkins and McMaster. He was allowed to practice before the Federal Court of Claims in 1974, before the U.S.

Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 1975, and upon Thurmond’s motion, before the Supreme Court of the United States in 1978. In 1981, based on Thurmond’s recommendation, then-President Ronald Reagan nominated McMaster as United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina. 

He completed his term as a United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina on  December 31, 1985. In the year 1991, after Governor Carroll A. Campbell Jr.’s appointment and confirmation from the South Carolina Senate, Henry McMaster was appointed as the state’s Commission on Higher Education.  He provided his service as a member on the Board of Directors of the nonprofit South Carolina Policy Council from 1991 to 2003 and served as board chairman from 1992 to 1993 for the same. In the year 2002, Henry McMaster was first elected to the attorney general position. He also won a second term for the same position in 2006. He did not seek re-election in 2010 in order to compete for the post of governor, which he unfortunately lost. 

After his term expired in January 2011, he left his office. Haley nominated McMaster to the South Carolina Ports Authority in 2011. McMaster left the Ports Authority after he was elected lieutenant governor of South Carolina in 2014. After Haley’s resignation, McMaster succeeded to the office of the governor. McMaster proceeded to win a full four-year term in the 2018 gubernatorial election. 

Henry McMaster’s Marriage

 Henry McMaster has been married to Peggy McMaster ( maiden name, Peggy Anderson )since 1978. They live in Columbia and are parents to two adult children. 

Henry McMaster’s Net Worth

McMaster and his wife are the sole owners of numerous buildings and rental properties in and around  Columbia. One of the houses they own is the McCord House. McCord House is famous because it was constructed in 1849 and used as a Union headquarters during the Civil War.

 In 2016, McMaster’s tax return indicated that he received $7.7 million in rent on such houses and apartments between 2006 and 201. For upkeep, maintenance, and cleaning of the rental properties he paid a little over $500,000.
