Hunter Biden’s attempt to dismiss his tax evasion case was met with skepticism by a U.S. judge.
The defense argued the charges were politically motivated, but the judge questioned the lack of evidence beyond a timeline of events.
The trial, involving charges of not paying $1.4 million in taxes, is set to begin in June, ahead of the November presidential election.
Hunter Biden has pleaded not guilty, and his legal team has suggested the case stems from a collapsed plea deal for misdemeanor tax charges.
During a court session in Los Angeles, Judge Mark Scarsi questioned Hunter Biden’s legal team about their claims of political pressure influencing the charges against Biden.
He was particularly interested in whether there was any evidence beyond the timing of the charges, which followed public accusations from political figures.
Scarsi asked Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell “Do you have any evidence other than the timeline?”
To which. Lowell acknowledged that “it’s a timeline, but it’s a juicy timeline.”
Judge Scarsi expressed doubts regarding the defense’s claim that the case against Hunter Biden was influenced by IRS agents who publicly discussed his tax matters last year.
Scarsi said “How are they responsible for what’s in the indictment?”
“I can’t make the connection that that’s why that happened,” Lowell said, later adding that “it was those two agents that started the dominoes.”
One of the prosecutors on the case said that it was “patently absurd” that the agent influenced prosecutors.
Hunter Biden, aged 54, has entered a plea of not guilty to charges of not paying $1.4 million in taxes from 2016 to 2019 despite significant spending.
His attorney stated he has since repaid the full amount.
His trial is set for June, ahead of the November presidential election, making the context politically charged.
Additionally, Hunter Biden faces another legal battle in Delaware related to an alleged illegal firearm purchase during drug use, where he also pleaded not guilty and seeks to dismiss the charges.
Special Counsel David Weiss, responsible for the charges against Hunter Biden, has criticized the defense’s approach as promoting “conspiracy theories” about the case.
Additionally, Hunter Biden’s international business activities, referenced in the tax charges, are being scrutinized in a House of Representatives impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden, exploring any potential financial gains from his son’s dealings.
However, there hasn’t been evidence found implicating the president in benefiting personally from these activities.
