His parents divorced, and his mother’s second husband adopted him. After graduating from Emory University (1965), Gingrich studied modern European history at Tulane University (MA 1968; Ph.D. 1971) and taught at West Georgia College (1970-78). 

He won a seat outside Atlanta in 1978 after losing the runs for the U.S. Congress in 1974 and 1976. Gingrich soon became known for his aggressive stance and conservative politics. 

In 1987 he attacked House Speaker Jim Wright over questionable financial matters; The allegations forced Wright to resign in 1989. That same year, House Minority Whip Gingrich was elected by a narrow margin of 87 to 85 over his fellow Republicans.
