Paul John Manafort Jr. is an American lobbyist, political consultant, and attorney. A long-time Republican Party campaign consultant, he chaired the Trump presidential campaign from June to August 2016. Manafort served as an adviser to the U.S. presidential campaigns of Republicans Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bob Dole.

Manafort’s tryst with controversy

Manafort often lobbied on behalf of foreign leaders such as former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, the former dictator of the Philippines Ferdinand Marcos, the former dictator of Zaire Mobutu Sese Seko, and Angolan guerrilla leader Jonas Savimbi. 

Lobbying to serve the interests of foreign governments requires registration with the Justice Department under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA); on June 27, 2017, he retroactively registered as a foreign agent.

Manafort was convicted as part of the Special Counsel investigation. He was also found guilty on eight counts and pleaded guilty to counts of conspiracy. Manafort was later released from federal prison to serve the rest of his sentence under house arrest due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

Criminal charges were pressed against him on five counts of tax fraud, two counts of bank fraud, one count of failing to disclose a hidden foreign bank account, and two counts of conspiracy. 

Manafort was sentenced to 7.5 years in prison but served less than two years as he was placed on house arrest due to the pandemic. President emeritus Mr. Trump pardoned Manafort on December 23, 2020.

Manafort has been married to Kathleen Bond Manafort since August 12, 1978. She graduated from George Washington University with a B.B.A. in 1979. Bond Manafort became an attorney after graduating from Georgetown University Law Center with a J.D. She then passed her Virginia Bar exam in 1988 and became a member of the DC Bar in 1991. They have two adult daughters, Jessica and Andrea.
