William Asa Hutchinson II, born on December 3, 1950, is an American attorney, businessman, and politician affiliated with the Republican Party.

Hutchinson served as the U.S. Attorney for Arkansas’ Western District from 1982 to 1985, U.S. Representative for Arkansas’s 3rd congressional district from 1997 to 2001.

Administrator of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration from 2001 to 2003, and Undersecretary for Border and Transportation Security at the United States Department of Homeland Security from 2003 to 2005. He was also the 46th governor of Arkansas from 2015 to 2023.

Hutchinson was born in Bentonville, Arkansas, to John Malcolm Hutchinson Sr. and Coral Virginia Hutchinson. He obtained a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Bob Jones University in South Carolina in 1972 and a J.D. from the University of Arkansas School of Law in 1975. He worked as an attorney in Fort Smith for 21 years, handling over 100 jury trials.

In 1982, President Ronald Reagan appointed him the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Arkansas, making him the youngest U.S. Attorney in the nation at age 31.

In 1996, Hutchinson won the U.S. House of Representatives election, beating incumbent Democrat Tim Hutchinson. He served for four terms in the House and was a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the House Judiciary Committee.

In 2001, President George W. Bush nominated him to be the administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration, a role he held for two years. He then served as the Undersecretary for Border and Transportation Security at the Department of Homeland Security for another two years.

Hutchinson ran for governor of Arkansas in 2014, beating incumbent Democrat Mike Beebe in the general election. He took office as governor on January 13, 2015, and was re-elected in 2018.

Hutchinson prioritized issues such as education, healthcare, and economic development during his tenure as governor. He signed several conservative policies into law, including a prohibition on abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy and a requirement for voters to present photo identification when voting.
