Originally hailing from Scranton, Pennsylvania, Dunleavy completed his high school education at Scranton Central High School in 1979. He pursued higher education at Misericordia University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1983. Furthering his academic pursuits, Dunleavy earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His journey to Alaska began in 1983, and he initially worked at a logging camp in Southeast Alaska.
