Mike Dunleavy, born on May 5, 1961, is an American politician and educator currently serving as the 12th governor of Alaska. A member of the Republican Party, Dunleavy previously held a seat in the Alaska Senate from 2013 to 2018. In the 2018 gubernatorial election, he emerged victorious against former Democratic United States senator Mark Begich after incumbent governor Bill Walker withdrew from the race. Dunleavy was subsequently reelected in 2022.
Originally hailing from Scranton, Pennsylvania, Dunleavy completed his high school education at Scranton Central High School in 1979. He pursued higher education at Misericordia University, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1983. Furthering his academic pursuits, Dunleavy earned a master’s degree in education from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His journey to Alaska began in 1983, and he initially worked at a logging camp in Southeast Alaska. Driven by his passion for teaching, Dunleavy obtained his teaching certificate and later achieved a master’s degree in education from the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Over the course of nearly two decades, Dunleavy contributed to the field of education in northwest Arctic communities, serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent.
