Rajiv Gandhi was the 6th Prime Minister of India, and he was the Prime Minister of the country from 1984 to 1989. Rajiv Gandhi was born on August 20, 1944, in Bombay, his mother being Indira Gandhi. After the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984, Rajiv Gandhi took over the reins of power.
Rajiv Gandhi started his political career even after his political interest at the behest of Mother Indira Gandhi. Won the first election from Amethi in 1981 in place of younger brother Sanjay and reached Lok Sabha. While his brother was alive, Rajiv remained out of politics.
Then, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi brought Rajiv into political life after the death of a powerful political personality, Sanjay, in an air crash on June 23, 1980. He was elected to the Lok Sabha by-election in June 1981 and became a member of the National Executive of the Youth Congress in the same month.
Despite having a political background, Rajiv Gandhi never took an interest in politics. Rajiv Gandhi’s entry into Indian politics and governance was only a matter of circumstances. The Congress won a landslide majority in the December 1984 elections.
Rajiv Gandhi also led to this victory. During his reign, he took many steps to improve administrative services and bureaucracy. Rajiv Gandhi made strenuous efforts to discourage the separatist agitators operating in Kashmir and Punjab.
To reduce the poverty level in India and improve the economic condition of the poor, Rajiv Gandhi implemented the Jawahar Rozgar Guarantee Scheme on April 1, 1989, under which several programs like Indira Awaas Yojana and Ten Lakh Kuan Yojana were introduced.
At the time of taking over the throne of Rajiv Gandhi, he had found India burning with terrorism. In the northern part of Punjab, ordinary citizens of a state like Assam in the northeast were struggling with terrorist and terrorist incidents, and this was a cause of great pain for Rajiv Gandhi.
He urged Sant Harcharan Singh Longowal, moving towards resolving terrorism in Punjab, to do something meaningful that would result in saving the people of Punjab from the fire of terror and as a result of this Rajiv-Longowal Pact Came to the fore, which had the immediate effect that the people of Punjab for the first time mentally accepted that terrorism could end from Punjab and that the youth of Punjab could again join the mainstream of the country.

Apart from the citation, the award also includes a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh. This Sadbhavana Day is observed every year on August 20 as Rajiv Gandhi Jayanti.
