He added, “I have no further comment at this time other than to say that our conversation was thorough and I appreciated the opportunity to share more context about my project.”

Russell Smith’s Statement

Holder’s attorney, Russell Smith, said that his client cooperated with the committee because there were “inconsistencies” in statements made by Trump and his family with previous footage. Smith stated in an assertion that Trump now no longer requests, and has been now no longer granted, any editorial control over the series. On the contrary, Alex Holder stated that at the outset that he could have complete editorial management. “There’s been a deluge of new evidence since we got started,” committee member Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, said on Wednesday. “And we just need to catch our breath, go through the new evidence, and then incorporate it into the hearings.” It is likely that Holder’s footage will feature prominently in future hearings as the Jan. 6 committee is set to recess between June 24 and July 12. The next round of hearings will supposedly be delayed by the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol Hill insurrection. The committee had initially said it would hold all its hearings in June, but now the schedule is likely to be pushed back to July. The planned hearings earlier laid out focused on two different agendas- extremists who attacked the Capitol on January 6, and what Trump was and wasn’t doing in response to the attack, respectively.

The establishment of the Select Committee to Investigate the Jan. 6 Attack on the United States Capitol was approved by the House on June 30, 2021, by a vote of 222–190. The commission was made up of ten members who were not federal employees and were chosen by congressional leaders, according to the provisions of the bill. Nancy Pelosi, Kevin McCarthy, Chuck Schumer, and Mitch McConnell, the four-party leaders in Congress, would have each nominated two representatives, with the Democratic and Republican leaders jointly naming the chair and vice-chair. Thus, an equal number of members might have been appointed by both Democrats and Republicans. By the end of 2021, the commissioners were expected to provide a report, and their term would have been set at 60 days.
