Black lives matter Memphis- Everything you need to know

On July 10, 2016, hundreds of Memphis protestors blocked the 1-40 bridge to raise awareness for black voices in Memphis They were protesting for the Black Lives Matter campaign.

When George screamed his last breaths, he was struck by a police officer. It ignited a historic summer of protests where thousands descended upon Memphis to demand change.. Although people saying those changes do not go far enough.

Floyd’s death caused a summer of protests where chants of “Black lives matter” echoed through city streets. They convicted former police officer Derek Chauvin of Floyd’s murder while three other officers await trial on related charges, but Abraham said that’s only a start.

“That’s just one of many Black and brown people to get murdered by police on a daily basis,” 

More than 3,000 policing-related bills have been introduced a legislature around the country in the year since Floyd’s death, more than 90 people have been introduced in Tennessee. – According to the National Conference on State Legislatures.

What is “Black lives matter?”

A group of political and social activists calling themselves Black lives matter (BLM) protests police brutality and all forms of racially motivated violence against black people. Even though specific organizations such as Black Lives Matter Global Network refer to themselves simply as “Black Lives Matter,” the Black Lives Matter movement is made up of a wide variety of people and organizations.

when did it begin?

In July 2013, the movement began with the use of the hashtag #Black Lives Matter on social media after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of American teen Trayvon Martin 17 months earlier in February 2012.

In 2014, the movement gained attention when two African Americans were killed – Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Protests and unrest took place in Ferguson, Missouri, a city in St. Louis, and New York City. Since Ferguson, Movement participants have mobilized against the deaths of countless other African Americans by police or while being detained by police, Black lives Matter activists became involved in the 2016 United States presidential election.

As a whole, Black lives Matter has no formal hierarchy, and a decentralized network of activists. The Movement returned to national headlines and gained further international attention during the global George Floyd protest in 2020foloowing the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.

 

About 15 million to 26million people took part in the 2020 Black lives matter protests in the United States.

Besides an array of views, the movement calls for reforms of the criminal justice system. The popularity of Black lives Matter was net negative in 2018, it grew increasingly popular through 2019 and 2020.

The Movement for Black Lives is a coalition of over 50 groups representing the interests of black communities across the United States. Following the murder of George Floyd, which called for sweeping legislative changes surrounding policing.

In the early days of the movement, activists met at Clevened State University, where between 1,500 and 2,000 activists participated in open discussions and demonstrations.

 

In 2016, the Ford Foundation announced plans to fund the M4BL Movement for Black Lives in a “Six-year investments”

 

The movement for Black Lives is a coalition of multiple groups more than 50 groups are taking interests of Black communities across the United States. Members include in the Black Lives Matter, are The National Conference of Black Lawyers and the Ella Baker Centre for Human Rights.

It is endorsed by multiple groups such as Color of Change, Race Forward, Brooklyn Movement Center, Policy link, Million Woman march cleaned, and one DC, The coalition receives communications and tactical support from an organization named Blackbird.

 

The name Black lives matter signals condemnation of the unjust killings of Black people by police (Black people are far more likely to be killed by Police in the United States than white people) and the demand that society value the lives and humanity of Black people as much as it values the lives and humanity of white people.

BLM activists have held large and influential protests in cities across the United States as well as internationally. A decentralized grassroots movement, Black Lives activists in local chapters who organize their own campaigns and programs lead Matter. The chapters are affiliated with the Black Lives Matter global Foundation, a nonprofit civil rights organization that is active in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

The Black Lives Matter movement has many goals. BLM activists seek to draw attention to the many ways in which Black people treated unfairly in society and how institutions, laws, and policies help to perpetuate that unfairness.

The movement has fought racism through such means as political action, letter-writing campaigns, and nonviolent protests. BLM seeks to combat police brutality, the over-policing of minority neighbourhoods, and the abuses committed by for-profit jails. Its efforts have included calls for better training for police and greater accountability for police misconduct.

BLM activists have also called for “defunding” the police – that is reducing police department’s budgets and investing the freed-up funds in community social services, such as mental health and conflict-resolution programs. BLM activists have also worked on voter registration and get out the vote campaigns in Black communities. In addition, BLM programs have celebrated Black artists and writers.

Conclusion

Black lives matter campaign was for the antiblack violence, especially in the form of Police brutality over Black people. It demands that society should value lives and show humanity towards people.

African Americans, along with many whites and people of different cultural backgrounds, are continuing the work of great activist like Dr Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, and Rosa Parks and so on and so forth. They stand for the lives lost such as Travon Marin, Eric Garner, Sandra Bland, Mike Brown and so many more black Lives that have been lost just in the last five years due to police brutality and the racial profiting of many white Americans.
