Floyd’s death caused a summer of protests where chants of “Black lives matter” echoed through city streets. They convicted former police officer Derek Chauvin of Floyd’s murder while three other officers await trial on related charges, but Abraham said that’s only a start.

What is “Black lives matter?”
A group of political and social activists calling themselves Black lives matter (BLM) protests police brutality and all forms of racially motivated violence against black people. Even though specific organizations such as Black Lives Matter Global Network refer to themselves simply as “Black Lives Matter,” the Black Lives Matter movement is made up of a wide variety of people and organizations.

In July 2013, the movement began with the use of the hashtag #Black Lives Matter on social media after the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of American teen Trayvon Martin 17 months earlier in February 2012.
In 2014, the movement gained attention when two African Americans were killed – Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Protests and unrest took place in Ferguson, Missouri, a city in St. Louis, and New York City. Since Ferguson, Movement participants have mobilized against the deaths of countless other African Americans by police or while being detained by police, Black lives Matter activists became involved in the 2016 United States presidential election.
As a whole, Black lives Matter has no formal hierarchy, and a decentralized network of activists. The Movement returned to national headlines and gained further international attention during the global George Floyd protest in 2020foloowing the murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin.
About 15 million to 26million people took part in the 2020 Black lives matter protests in the United States.
Besides an array of views, the movement calls for reforms of the criminal justice system. The popularity of Black lives Matter was net negative in 2018, it grew increasingly popular through 2019 and 2020.
The Movement for Black Lives is a coalition of over 50 groups representing the interests of black communities across the United States. Following the murder of George Floyd, which called for sweeping legislative changes surrounding policing.

The name Black lives matter signals condemnation of the unjust killings of Black people by police (Black people are far more likely to be killed by Police in the United States than white people) and the demand that society value the lives and humanity of Black people as much as it values the lives and humanity of white people.
BLM activists have held large and influential protests in cities across the United States as well as internationally. A decentralized grassroots movement, Black Lives activists in local chapters who organize their own campaigns and programs lead Matter. The chapters are affiliated with the Black Lives Matter global Foundation, a nonprofit civil rights organization that is active in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

BLM activists have also called for “defunding” the police – that is reducing police department’s budgets and investing the freed-up funds in community social services, such as mental health and conflict-resolution programs. BLM activists have also worked on voter registration and get out the vote campaigns in Black communities. In addition, BLM programs have celebrated Black artists and writers.
