Hairstylist David Lopez chats with Mulvaney about her experiences as a woman in episode two of Ulta Beauty‘s “The Beauty Of” series and also about the good, the terrible, and the hilarious moments that come with finding girlhood.

The two dive deep into discussions of identity and coming out experiences in the LGBTQ+ world, including being able to love, perform, and raise a family.

Dylan Mulvaney also discussed her recent transition, her upbringing in a conservative household, and the challenges she experienced in recognizing her inner beauty in this episode. Mulvaney, who has over eight million TikTok followers, said that the experience of coming out as a trans woman had given her hope that she would eventually find love. She wants to continue her career as a musician and hopes to become a mother and start a family someday.

Mulvaney added that her “Girlhood” series received a lot of criticism and called out people for being transphobic.

She quoted, “I get a lot of hate about calling myself a ‘girl’ and not a ‘woman.’ And because you know that term, they think I’m infantilizing myself or that, you know, once you turn 18, you’re no longer a girl… so I think some of that’s rooted in transphobia.”

The newest episode for Ulta Beauty’s podcast, “The Beauty Of…”, dropped on Thursday, featuring transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney and gender-fluid presenter David Lopez.

More than 16,000 people have listened to the interview since Monday, and Ulta Beauty’s Instagram post of an excerpt from the interview has had more than 348 thousand views since it was published.

Many viewers felt that a woman, given the company’s target demographic, should have been invited instead of Mulvaney and wrote negative comments about Mulvaney, Lopez, and transgender individuals in the video’s comment section.

Internet users have called out for a boycott of Ulta products and stores, claiming that Mulvaney and Lopez were misogynistic and that Dylan is stereotyping women.

Some commenters compared Dylan to a “Barbie Pouch” who uses tampons as a fashion accessory but avoids the hardships of womanhood, while many called out Dylan that she acts in excessively “feminine ways” and for her, being a girl means wearing her makeup, eating habits, and dramatic emotions, all of which are often seen as representing harmful sexist stereotypes.

How has Ulta Beauty reacted to the boycott calls?

Ulta Beauty received so much negative feedback on its YouTube video that they have to disable comments. However, the company has made an effort to reply to transphobic and nasty tweets. On Sunday afternoon, the firm took to Twitter to defend “The Beauty Of…” and assured listeners that their goal is to encourage discussion about widening the lens surrounding established beauty standards.

Ulta Beauty tweeted, “The premise of ‘The Beauty Of…’ is to feature conversations that widen the lens surrounding traditional beauty standards. We believe beauty is for everyone. And while we recognize some conversations we host will challenge perspectives and opinions, we believe constructive dialogue is one important way to move beauty forward.”

They further added, “The intersectionality of gender identity is nuanced, something David and Dylan acknowledge themselves within the episode. Regardless of how someone identifies, they deserve our respect.”

Ulta Beauty has disabled comments on videos featuring Mulvaney on both YouTube and Instagram but is allowing comments on its tweets, where anti-trans critics have continued to slam the company and Mulvaney. However, there have also been reactions defending Mulvaney, Lopez, and Ulta Beauty and countering the anti-trans vitriol.
