Email Scandal

Clinton faced controversy and criticism early in March 2015 after it was revealed that she had used her personal email account to conduct official government business during her term as secretary of state. Clinton said at a news conference at the United Nations she used her personal email for convenience, as allowed by state department protocol, to discuss gender equality and the political situation in Iran.

The State Department issued a statement regarding Clinton’s ongoing email scandal in May 2016. When she did not seek permission to use a private email server, the department criticized her and said it would not have approved it if she had.

The FBI has decided not to recommend criminal charges against Clinton following a year-long investigation of her email practices while she was secretary of state. FBI Director James Comey announced the decision on July 5, 2016. Comey said at a news conference that no reasonable prosecutor would file such a case. According to him, even though there is no clear evidence that Secretary Clinton or her colleagues intended to violate laws governing the handling of classified information, there is evidence that they were extremely careless in handling highly sensitive information.

After the FBI’s recommendation, Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced she would not charge Clinton in the case. The FBI Director James Comey as well as career prosecutors and agents who handled this investigation met with me late today,” Lynch wrote in a statement. Accordingly, I received and accepted their unanimous recommendation that the comprehensive, year-long investigation be closed and that no charges be brought against any individuals within the scope of the investigation.

On October 28, 2016, Comey revealed that while investigating disgraced former Congressman Anthony Weiner for texts he had sent to a 15-year-old girl, investigators had discovered emails that were “relevant” to the investigation into Clinton’s use of a personal email server. Hillary Clinton’s top aide, Huma Abedin, is said to have sent the emails to Clinton’s personal server on Weiner’s behalf, but the content of the emails has not been revealed.
