The 43-year-old Alexander Smirnov faces two counts of fabricating a record and making a false statement about the information he gave to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, leading to a significant setback for House Republicans’ impeachment investigation attempt of President Joe Biden.

It has come to light by a Justice Department special counsel that Alexander Smirnov, a former FBI informant, has lied about the president’s and his son Hunter Biden’s foreign business activity.

Smirnov was taken into custody on Wednesday at the Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas following the return of the indictment by a federal grand jury in the Central District of California.

Hunter Biden was previously the target of tax and gun-related accusations brought by special counsel David Weiss.

House Republicans have used Smirnov’s account of Hunter Biden’s financial transactions to support their impeachment of President Joe Biden.

When Joe Biden was a presidential contender in June 2020, Smirnov made these accusations to investigators.

According to Smirnov’s allegations, executives of the Ukrainian energy company Burisma allegedly told him in 2015 and 2016 that they had recruited Hunter Biden to “protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems.” Hunter Biden served on the board of Burisma.

In addition, according to the prosecution, Smirnov made up the story that Burisma executives told him that they had paid Hunter and then-Vice President Joe Biden $5 million each so that Hunter “will take care of all those issues through his dad.”FBI Informant Indicted for False Biden Claim by Special Counsel

Smirnov’s comments referred to a criminal probe into Burisma conducted by General Viktor Shokin, the Ukrainian prosecutor at the time.

However, Weiss claims that Smirnov first communicated with executives in 2017, when the Obama-Biden administration ended, and Shokin had already been fired in February 2016.

The 37-page indictment states that Smirnov’s connection with Burisma began when then-Vice President Joe Biden “had no ability to influence U.S. policy and when the Prosecutor General was no longer in office.”

Prosecutors claim that Smirnov “transformed his routine and unextraordinary business contacts with Burisma” into accusations of bribery against Biden.

Weiss charges Smirnov with being driven by political bias, citing texts in which Smirnov claimed to have information that would have resulted in Biden’s imprisonment.

According to the allegations, Smirnov allegedly made the same fraudulent statements to FBI agents in September 2023, altered his account of previous claims, and spread “a new false narrative after he said he met with Russian officials.”

The accusations against Smirnov might severely hinder House Republicans’ attempts to remove President Joe Biden from office due to unproven allegations that he received bribes.

The chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., who has been leading the probe into Hunter Biden’s business dealings, tried to cover it up by arguing that Smirnov’s information to the FBI is not relevant to the impeachment of President Biden.

However, after Smirnov’s claims came to light, Ranking Member of the Oversight Committee Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., urged Republicans to conclude their “doomed impeachment inquiry.”

Raskin stated, “In a detailed indictment, Special Counsel David Weiss − who was appointed by former President Donald Trump − has demonstrated how key evidence at the heart of House Republicans’ impeachment inquiry is based on a lie.”

Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, described Smirnov’s charge as “just another example” of House Republicans “peddling falsehoods based on dishonest, uncredible allegations and witnesses.”

Lowell stated, “For months, we have warned that Republicans have built their conspiracies about Hunter and his family on lies told by people with political agendas, not facts.”

He emphasized, “We were right, and the air is out of their balloon.”
