About the speakers 

Dr. Zsuzsanna Jakab:

Dr. Zsuzsanna Jakab is the Deputy Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), a United Nations body committed to public health and in charge of responding to health emergencies.

Before her current position, Dr. Jakab held several high-profile national and international public health policy positions. These would include WHO Regional Director for the European Region (2010-2019), Founding Director of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (2005-2010), and State Secretary at the Hungarian Ministry of Health, Social, and Family Affairs (2002-2005).

This is where she oversaw the country’s preparations for European Union accession in the area of public health.

Sen. Bob Menendez:

Senator Bob Menendez, the son of Cuban immigrants, has served in the United States Senate since 2006, representing the state of New Jersey. Senator Menendez has established himself as a foreign policy leader as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

He is striving to do worldwide what he has done in New Jersey: protect the most vulnerable in our society and provide a voice to those least able to speak for themselves.

Under his chairmanship, the group released “Global Forced Migration: The Political Crisis of Our Time” in June 2020. Senator Menendez was instrumental in the passage of the COVID-19 relief packages and other healthcare measures in the Senate, as well as crafting immigration reform initiatives.

Before joining the Senate, he was a member of the House of Representatives.

About Dr. Gunisha Kaur:

Dr. Gunisha Kaur is a human rights researcher and assistant professor of anesthesiology.

Dr. Kaur is the Founder and Medical Director of the Human Rights Impact Lab, as well as a Faculty Fellow at the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies, where she co-leads the migrations research team.

Dr. Kaur’s study focuses on improving the health of displaced people including migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. She has pioneered the study of human rights using scientific techniques, drawing on her vast expertise and research in neurology.

The National Institutes of Health is now funding her study. Dr. Kaur was chosen as a pioneer in scientific inquiries concerning migrant health. Dr. Kaur was named a member of the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Honor Society. Also, she was named a Stephen M. Kellen Term Member of the Council on Foreign Relations for her contributions to scientific research on migrant health.

She graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in 2006, Weill Cornell Medical College with an M.D. in 2010, and Harvard University with an M.A. in medical anthropology in 2015.
