Graham Allen, born on 11 January 1953, is a British politician affiliated with the Labour Party. He represented the Nottingham North constituency as a Member of Parliament from 1987 until his retirement in 2017, choosing not to run for re-election in the 2017 general election. Born in Nottingham, England, Allen received his education at Nottingham High School, a grammar school. He studied at the University of Leeds, earning a BA in Politics and Sociology in 1975. After graduation, he was a National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL) research officer.
In 1983, Allen successfully ran for a seat on the Nottingham City Council. During his four-year tenure, he held housing and social services responsibilities. At age 34 1987, he secured a position in the Parliament. Throughout his parliamentary career, Allen served in various shadow ministerial roles. He held the position of Shadow Minister for Education and Employment from 1992 to 1994, followed by Shadow Minister for Health from 1994 to 1997, and Shadow Minister for Social Security from 1997 to 1998.
Between 1998 and 2001, Allen took on the role of Vice-Chamberlain of the Household under Prime Minister Tony Blair’s administration. Allen strongly opposed the Labour government’s decision to engage in the Iraq War in 2003. He stood apart from his party and was among the few Labour MPs who voted against the war. In 2017, Allen announced that he would not seek re-election to Parliament. He expressed his desire to allocate more time to his family and pursue other personal interests.
