Paul Manafort, an American lobbyist, political consultant, and attorney, has played a significant role in Republican Party campaigns and political strategy. Born on April 1, 1949, in New Britain, Connecticut, Manafort graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 1967 and later obtained a degree in business administration from Georgetown University in 1971. He further pursued his studies at Georgetown University Law Center, earning a J.D. in 1974.

During the early 1970s, Manafort embarked on his political journey by contributing to Republican campaigns in Connecticut. His talents and expertise soon led him to Washington, D.C., where he became a prominent Republican lobbyist in the 1980s. Alongside Charles R. Black Jr. and Roger J. Stone, Manafort co-founded the lobbying firm Black, Manafort & Stone in 1980. Peter G. Kelly joined the firm in 1984.

Manafort’s influence extended beyond U.S. borders as he counseled the presidential campaigns of notable Republicans such as Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bob Dole. His lobbying activities encompassed engagements with foreign governments, including Ukraine, Romania, and Zaire.

In 2016, Manafort assumed the role of campaign chairman for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign from June to August. He was responsible for overseeing the campaign’s strategic decisions and operational aspects. However, allegations of financial impropriety surfaced, leading to his resignation from the campaign in August 2016.

Subsequently, Manafort faced legal consequences. Special counsel Robert Mueller indicted him on money laundering, tax evasion, and failure to register as a foreign agent. In August 2018, Manafort was convicted on eight counts of bank fraud and five counts of tax fraud. This resulted in a sentence of 7.5 years in prison.

Manafort is serving his sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Alexandria, Virginia. His expected release date is scheduled for March 2024.
