What is Student Loan Forgiveness by Joe Biden?

President of the U.S.A, Joe Biden announced debt cancellation for millions of people who had taken federal student loans. Joe Biden promised to assist debt-strapped Americans, but some Republicans said Biden’s decision could worsen inflation.

The Student Loan Forgiveness Plan will repeal up to $20,000 in Biden’s new initiative if the borrower meets the plan’s terms. Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers said that consumer spending power released by forgiving loans could increase the prices of homes, care, and other necessary goods.

Other economists, including Moody’s Mark Zandi and the White House, said that they believed the impact of restarting loan payments in 2023 would be deflationary.

The borrowers who make their income less than $125,000 yearly will get relief of up to $10,000 in student debt loans. But according to the plan released by the White House, if you were the recipient of a Pell Grant, you are qualified for up to $20,000 in a student loan forgiveness plan rather than $10,000.

A whopping amount of $125,000 will be given to individual borrowers, and $25,000 will be given to married couples who applied for the loan jointly.

Biden's Administration

An expert in Higher education, Mark Kantrowitz, stated that anyone who made their payment on the loan after 13th March 2020 is only eligible for a refund. According to the data, nearly 9.1 million borrowers made payments between April 2020 and March 2022.

A spokesperson for the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, Allie Arcese, said that the idea behind offering more forgiveness to Pell Grant recipients was to target the relief.

Half the majority of the borrowers will need to fill out the form to receive relief on the loan. Although the Department of Education has already taken out the income information of 8 million borrowers, so they will be enrolled automatically in the program.

Out of 8 million, there are 6 million students who have currently filled out the Free Application for Student loan Forgiveness plan, and another 2 million borrowers are those who have income-driven repayment plans and have already submitted income information for 2020 or 2021. The Education Department will contact borrowers who are automatically qualified to inform them.

Biden's new plan

Kantrowitz said that Borrowers must apply for the application before 15th November 2022 as it will expire on 31st December. “If the forgiveness will cause your debt to be completely erased, you can avoid having to make any payments on your student loans,” Kantrowitz said.

Experts said the borrowers could reach out to their servicer if they have any queries regarding a student loan forgiveness plan. Kantrowitz said that the Loan servicers were likely to be inundated with questions starting a few days before the deadlines.
