Why Trump sues CNN?
The former president of the U.S.A Donal Trump, 76, sued one of the well-known cable T.V. networks, CNN. It is an American news network, and Donald Trump has filed a case against it and has also asked for $475 million for defaming his image as well. Donald Trump asserted that CNN, being the most influential news institution, has done this intentionally to defeat him politically and also so it could halt his future political campaign.
Trump’s lawyer filed the litigation in the U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on 3rd October 2022 ( Monday). The lawsuit primarily focuses on the term “The Big Lie” by CNN regarding Trump’s false assertion of widespread fraud that Trump claimed cost him the presidential election of 2020. Trump couldn’t secure victory against Joe Biden, current president of the U.S.A.
CNN has used the term with Nazi connotations more than 7,700 times on its channel, referring to Trump since January 2021. Trump said that it was intended to aggravate, scare and trigger people.
Trump’s lawyer said that the U.S. cable news station CNN has tried to smudge Trump “with a series of ever-more scandalous, false, and defamatory labels of ‘racist,’ ‘Russian lackey,’ ‘insurrectionist,’ and ultimately ‘Hitler.”
The filing states that “Beyond simply highlighting any negative information about the plaintiff and ignoring all positive information about him, CNN has sought to use its massive influence, purportedly as a ‘trusted’ news source, to defame the plaintiff in the minds of its viewers and readers for the purpose of defeating him politically.”
In a 29-page trail Trump, a Republican, asserted that it’s not the first time when CNN has criticized him, it has a long record of condemning him, but in past months it stepped up its attack. Moreover, Trump said the network was doing that because it feared that he would again run for the presidential election in the year 2024.
The suit said that CNN has tried hard to blemish the plaintiff and has also put efforts to turn the political balance to the leftist. “As a part of its concerted effort to tilt the political balance to the left, CNN has tried to taint the plaintiff,” the suit said.
The lawsuit depicted several examples in which Donald Trump was compared with 20th- Century German dictator Adolf Hitler. A special report by host Fareed Zakaria in January 2022 confirmed the claims as it included an image of the German dictator compared with Donald Trump.
Although, Trump has not opened up about his plans regarding whether he would run for the 2024 presidential election or not. He has undoubtedly given such hints but didn’t clarify.
As of now, CNN hasn’t responded and commented on the allegations made to it by Trump.
It’s not the first time when Trump attacked CNN. He repeatedly attacked other major outlets such as The New York Times and tagged them as “fake news.” Along with this, he filed several lawsuits against major big-tech companies in the past and also succeeded a little.
He also filed a suit against the microblogging site named Twitter for prohibiting him from its platform after the capitol attack took place on the 6th January 2021 by Trump’s supporters. Though, California Judge rejected the suit earlier this year.
In the news, Chris Licht, the New chief of CNN, requested his news team not to use the phrase “fake news” in a meeting held more than three months ago. The frequent use of the phrase could be too close to Democratic efforts to brand the former president Donald Trump.
Trump is expecting to file more lawsuits
Trump gave a statement on Monday that he would file similar lawsuits against other news media outlets. He also said that he would take “appropriate actions” against the House committee investigating the case of the 6th January attack on the capitol. The lawsuit came in the mid of Trump’s eying to fight for the 2024 election.
The lawsuit came as Donald Trump faced legal actions, including a criminal investigation led by the Justice Department. The case was filed for holding legal records at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida after he left the office in January 2021.
According to the US Justice Department, when F.B.I. officers raided Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home last month on 8th August, they found empty folders that were marked with labeled banners among more than 11,000 government documents and photographs.
The department made all the evidence public. Thirty-three boxes were found in Trump’s house. Besides, a lawsuit was also filed against Trump and his three children alleging “years of bank, tax and insurance fraud.”
Letitia James, New York attorney general, sued Trump, his family, and the Trump Organization as well. He also said that the penalties could prove a “death penalty” for his organization. It could also put Trump’s ability down to do business in the state in upcoming years.
