Trump called the rally a “setup” in an interview with The Federalist on Thursday, though he also put out a statement decrying the treatment of Capitol riot defendants the same day. Collins and Kent didn’t seem to mind their divergence with Trump, however. “I think today was a very huge success,” Collins said. “It was peaceful, we were able to get our message out loud and clear.”
In a city still, on edge after the Jan. 6 insurrection, law enforcement bore down in large numbers on the Capitol on Saturday over concerns that a rally in support of the jailed rioters would turn violent. It didn’t. The crowd was sparse and incidents were few. The only clear parallels to the riots more than eight months ago by supporters of Donald Trump were the false claims put forth by the rally organizers about the violence that January day when Congress met to certify the election of Joe Biden.
Trump’s statement tosses fuel on a combustible situation. A Monday statement from the US Capitol Police warning about “concerning online chatter about a demonstration planned for September 18” already raised worries that Saturday’s Justice for J6 rally could spiral out of control and result in violent scenes reminiscent of January 6. But extremism experts are sceptical.
The Justice for J6 rally would not just be limited to Washington DC, according to a released by ‘Look Ahead America’, one of the chief organizers of the event. The efforts of the September 18 rally will be joined in by at least 17 additional regions. While most Justice for J6 rallies are scheduled for September 25, at least three will be carried out on Saturday. These include the original one, which is being held in Washington DC near the United States Capitol premises. Other rallies, scheduled for Saturday, are being organized in North Carolina and Washington state.
