Republicans Oppose Trump 2024 Bid – Despite winning the 2016 election and maintaining a sizable group of devoted followers, Trump is perceived as diminished after several candidates he supported in the midterm elections last week lost their seats.
Since the midterm elections last week did not generate the anticipated red wave, leaving the Senate in Democratic hands, the primary landscape has changed.
Many prominent Republicans, including popular governors, senators, and even Trump’s former vice president, could oppose him for the Republican nomination in 2024.
Although none of them have declared candidacy at this time, here are some of Trump’s critics and Republicans who could oppose Trump 2024 bid.
List of Republicans Oppose Trump 2024 Bid
Ron DeSantis
Ron DeSantis received Trump’s endorsement in 2018 and became Florida’s governor. Though they share political ideals, DeSantis has taken a more systematic approach and is less prone to Trump’s tantrums, making him a rising star on the right. In midterms, he was re-elected with a landslide 20-point victory, which will only inflame an already antagonistic relationship with Trump.
He’s a family man who shares the Republican Party’s emphasis on marriage and children. He kept Florida open during the pandemic and oversaw a series of conservative policies that made headlines, including a ban on discussing gender identity in public schools and the relocation of refugees to a Massachusetts island. Because of such massive popularity, Ron DeSantis could oppose Trump 2024 bid.
Mike Pence
Mike Pence has earned the hatred of Trump’s most ardent supporters and is currently winning only approximately seven percent of voting intentions. Following the riotous attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, Trump’s former vice president reversed his longstanding support for the President and stated that President Trump’s actions that day were “reckless.” All this can be a reason Mike Pence could stand as a Republican to oppose Trump 2024 bid.
Nikki Haley
Trump appointed Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, as the United States ambassador to the United Nations.
Haley hasn’t abandoned Trump entirely, but she has spoken out against his refusal to concede the 2020 election. She might be the only woman to run in the primary election from Republicans to oppose Trump 2024 bid.
Tim Scott
Tim Scott, a 57-year-old senator from South Carolina, has stated his desire to make history by becoming the party’s first black President. On Tuesday, after being re-elected with a 26-point victory over his opponent, he mentioned his grandfather and wished he could have lived to see another black man become President. This statement indicates that he could run as a Republican against Donald Trump in 2024 election.
Ted Cruz
Ted Cruz is the only politician close to Trump and DeSantis in polling regarding 2024. The Texas senator who pushed Trump closest in 2016 maintained a modicum of self-respect by refusing to kowtow immediately, and though he subsequently accepted his place in a party in Trump’s grip, he has maintained his profile as a leading provocateur on the hard right of the party.
Josh Hawley
Josh Hawley is tall, intelligent, and a hardliner who delights in owning the liberals and encouraging confrontation with China. On January 6, he was on camera raising a fist to protesters outside the Capitol building and then sprinting away when looters stormed the building. He now heavily criticizes Trump and can even stand against him in forthcoming presidential elections.
Glenn Youngkin
Glenn Youngkin, a 55-year-old businessman, stole the governorship of Virginia from the Democrats in 2021 and has combined traditional conservative ideas (lower taxes, more money for the police) with controversial ones (targeting transgender people and anti-racism initiatives in schools, for example).
The governor of Virginia was able to win an election in a state that traditionally votes Democratic by avoiding direct contact with Trump while employing Trumpian methods such as accusing progressives of running amok in schools by teaching critical race theory to children. He has garnered a racist charge from Trump while trying to uphold a comparatively soft, fleece-vested image.
Youngkin’s involvement in the midterm elections reportedly has several Republican Party members ready to endorse him if he seeks the party’s candidacy. However, if Youngkin is the party’s current standard bearer for moderation, he won’t find much support in the Republican Party under Trump and DeSantis.
Mike Pompeo
Secretary of State in the Trump administration Mike Pompeo graduated first in his class at West Point, served as an army officer during the Gulf War, went into business, was elected as a Tea Party congressman from Kansas, and eventually became the director of the CIA.
Though he’s laying the groundwork, he’s a long shot at becoming President now. However, there are chances that he could oppose Trump 2024 bid as a Republican.
Liz Cheney
The Wyoming congresswoman is not only the epitome of Republican primogeniture but also the strictest of conservatives. An unlikely hero to liberals and ex-congresswoman after losing her primary, Liz Cheney decided after the attack on the Capitol that enough was enough and stood against Trump as vice-chair of the January 6 committee. Though she hasn’t officially announced her candidacy, some have speculated that if Cheney ran as a conservative constitutional on the ballot in all 50 states, she could split the right and thwart Trump’s agenda.
Paul Ryan
As evidence, Ryan pointed to the GOP’s losses in the House in 2018 and the Senate and the presidency in 2020 when he said on Sunday that the party would likely lose the White House with Trump. The ex-Speaker vowed never to vote for Trump again and calls himself Never-Again-Trumper. Though it is a mystery whether Ryan will run for the 2024 presidential elections, there are strong chances that as a Republican, Paul can oppose Trump 2024 bid.
Winsome Sears
A few days before Trump declared his candidacy for a third term in 2024, Sears announced she would not vote for him. She said people had issued a very obvious message for Trump to pull back, and a good leader knows when they have become a burden and it’s time to step off the stage.
Bill Cassidy
After Trump’s second impeachment trial, Bill Cassidy was one of seven Republicans in the Senate to vote to convict him. He also said last year that he wouldn’t support Trump in a 2024 bid because Trump is the first Republican President to lose the House, the Senate, and the presidency in consecutive elections.
Mark Esper
Esper said earlier this year that he would not vote for Trump in 2024 if he ran again because he believes that any elected leader must meet certain basic criteria, such as the ability to put country over self, to have a certain amount of integrity and principle, and to bring people together and unite the country, and Donald Trump does not meet these marks for him.
He also says the GOP should look to the next generation of candidates since Trump is “unfit for office.”
Alyssa Farah Griffin
On the day of Trump’s announcement, Griffin, who had previously served as the White House communications director under Trump, began publicly criticizing the President on Twitter and said Donald Trump was unfit for office and a clear danger to democracy.
Kristi Noem
Governor Kelliher of South Dakota, who just earned a second term in office, has been considered one of several Republican governors who might challenge Trump in the next presidential election, scheduled for 2024. Despite Trump’s support for her reelection in the 2018 midterms, Republican Senator Kristi Noem declared this week that she does not believe Trump to be the best hope for the party in 2020.
Mo Brooks
After Brooks distanced himself from Trump’s accusations that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him, Trump stopped supporting him, labeling Brooks “woke” and “disloyal.”
In response, the representative from Alabama said that Trump alienates independents and Republicans by being dishonest, disloyal, incompetent, and nasty.
Larry Hogan
The two-term governor of Maryland is the latest Republican politician to be discussed as a potential opponent for the former President in 2024. Larry Hogan called for the GOP to “turn the page” and move on from Trump last week, blaming him for the party’s lackluster midterm results and taking a veiled shot at Trump on the day of the former President’s 2024 announcement.
