The GREEN, Sundance Channel’s weekly primetime destination devoted to environmental programming, has announced its third season lineup today, according to Laura Michalchyshyn, the network’s Executive Vice President and General Manager. The series premieres on Earth Day, April 21st, and continues weekly throughout 2009. As part of The GREEN, hosted by Robert Redford, new episodes from two series will be broadcast, Eco Trip: The Real Cost of Living and Carbon Cops, intercut with documentary films and interviews.
In this season of The GREEN, we have a lot to look forward to. The GREEN was the first network to air major primetime entertainment related to environmental issues, and now the network offers more original series as well as additional international series, in addition to high-quality digital programming and documentaries of the highest quality. Michalchyshyn acknowledges there is still some sobering news about the planet we live on. However, he points out that this season is full of inspiring and practical tips about how living a greener life can be easy, affordable, and fun.
ECO TRIP: THE REAL COST OF LIVING (8×30) – Begins April 21 9:00pm e/p
The documentary, “Eco Trip: The Real Cost of Living,” is hosted by David de Rothschild, an environmentalist and founder of Adventure Ecology, which shows the environmental, social and health effects of everyday items. Through each episode, de Rothschild introduces viewers to greener alternatives. Episodes include: Chocolate, Cotton T-Shirt, Gold Ring, Paper Napkin, Light Bulb, Bottled Water, Cell Phone, Salmon. Peacock Productions produces the series.
CARBON COPS (6×30) – Begins April 21 9:30pm e/p
As six families are coached through a fascinating step-by-step process to reduce their carbon footprint and the effects of global warming on the planet, the reality-style show follows them through a fascinating process of auditing their current energy use. Throughout the six-part series, Carbon Cops Lish Fejer and Sean Fitzgerald challenge households to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 50%. Using simple, practical terms that are easy to understand, Fejer and Fitzgerald help each family conserve energy and change habits by blending science with the environment in a way that is refreshingly down-to-earth.
GREEN PORNO – SEASON 2 (6 episodes on sundancechannel.com April 1)
There will be six new episodes exploring the reproductive habits of marine animals in Isabella Rossellini’s critically acclaimed short film series about the sex life of various creatures. As with “Green Porno,” this batch of movies is highly entertaining and scientifically accurate. Productions by Isabella Rossellini, Jody Shapiro, and Rick Gilbert.
ECO HEROES – SEASON 2 (13 episodes on sundancechannel.com and Sundance Channel, beginning April 21)
The show is hosted and created by Majora Carter, an environmental activist. Each episode features a conversation with an innovator who is leading the Green movement and has inspired Carter both personally and professionally. A series such as “Eco Heroes” makes it possible for the general public to be kept up-to-date with today’s green visionaries by breaking down advanced, cutting-edge environmental thinking into manageable pieces. There are also contributions from Ira Ehrenpreis, Shai Agassi, Jerry Fiddler, Sarah Gitlin, Sherry Strong, Zem Joaquin, Jonathan Demme, Adam Green, Joanna Opot, Morgan Simon, Zena Nelson, James Wells, and Robert Thurman.
THE LAZY ENVIRONMENTALIST (7×30) – Begins June 16 at 9:00pm e/p
As host of this original show, Josh Dorfman engages environmental skeptics who have expertise in fields such as fashion, food, architecture, business, and design to convince them that a green lifestyle can be easily balanced with their professional and personal lives. It is Josh’s mission to bring these experts ecologically sound options that meet their very high standards by operating on the theory that consumers shouldn’t settle for an expensive product or innovation of inferior design simply because it is environmentally friendly. A new green world is being created by forward-thinking designers, products, and processes in this documentary series. In each episode, an individual innovator or innovation is featured that has the potential to transform our daily lives as it explores a variety of green themes. Season 3 episodes include Habitat, Edibles, Art, Architecture, Energy, Babies, Creatures, Music, Leisure, Businesses, Communities, Games, and Design. It is produced by Scout Productions, who were also responsible for seasons 1 and 2.

“E2 design” examines how pioneers and innovators in sustainable architecture are solving urgent social and environmental challenges through their work, narrated by Brad Pitt. Stories from all over the world are featured in this series. Throughout the episodes, we examine the impact of the built environment – both ecologically and socially – and how to reduce its climate change impact. A first season airs in 2009 and a second and third season airs in 2010. The series is produced by Kontentreal.

FIGHTING GOLIATH – TV Premiere – May 12th
It follows the story of Texans who fight a high-stakes battle for clean air in “Fighting Goliath: Texas Coal Wars,” narrated by Robert Redford. Despite the opposition of 19 conventional coal-fired power plants slated to be built in Eastern and Central Texas, the film introduces unlikely partners – mayors, ranchers, CEOs, community groups, legislators, lawyers, and citizens – who have joined forces in opposition to their construction.
THE WORLD ACCORDING TO MONSANTO – TV Premiere – May 12th
Monsanto is a leading chemical company and the provider of seed technology for 90% of the world’s genetically engineered crops. According to “The World According to Monsanto”, it is one of the biggest chemical companies in the world. As a result, it paints a grim picture of a company with a history of environmental abuse and health scandals.
HOW TO COOK YOUR LIFE – TV Premiere – May 19th
She explores Buddhism and the age-old adage that you are what you eat with filmmaker Doris Dörrie. As Dörrie describes Zen Buddhism’s guiding principles for preparing food and living life in “How To Cook Your Life,” the charismatic Zen Master Edward Espe Brown assists him. In “How To Cook Your Life”, we learn how to be attentive to the most mundane of our everyday lives and also discover one of the most beautiful occupations: cooking.
BURNING THE FUTURE: COAL IN AMERICA – May 26th
As the coal industry confronts residents of West Virginia, “Burning the Future: Coal in America” examines this explosive conflict. In the face of emerging “clean coal” energy policies, local activists witness the devastation caused by coal. When 1.4 million acres of mountains are wiped out and toxic ground water is present, our heroes launch a valiant fight to enlist the nation’s assistance in preserving their mountains, saving their families, and preserving their way of life against toxic ground water.
