Muharram is the first month of the Islamic year. It is also called Hijri. It is a Muslim holiday. Hijri Sun starts from this month. Not only this, but this month is also included in the four holy months of Islam.

There was a vicious king named Yazid in Iraq who was an enemy of humanity. Hazrat Imam Hussain declared war on the blood king Yazid. Hazrat Imam Hussain, the Nawase of Mohammad-e-Mustafa, was martyred with family and friends in a place called Karbala. The month Hussein and his family were martyred was the month of Muharram.

The governor summoned Hussain to the Raj Bhavan and gave him the order of Yazid. To this, Husain said- ‘I cannot obey the order of Yazid, an adulterer, a corrupt, and a non-believer of God. After this Imam, Hussain reached Mecca Sharif to complete the Haj. There Yazid sent his soldiers to kill Hussein as a passenger. Hussein came to know about this, and Mecca is such a holy place where killing anyone is forbidden.

So to avoid the bloodshed, Hussein, instead of performing Haj, did a small ritual and went to Iraq with his family. Hussain, along with his family, was in Karbala on 61st of the month of Muharram 61, advising to bring Yazid’s army on the right path till the 9th, but he did not agree. After this, Hussain said- ‘You give me one night long so that I can pray to Allah’ This night is called ‘Ashur ki Raat’, hug day.

Hussain was left alone then, but then suddenly heard a camp noise, his six-month-old son Ali Asghar was suffering from thirst. Hussain took him in his hands and brought him to Maidan-e-Karbala. He asked Yazid’s army to feed the son with water, but the army did not listen, and the son succumbed to Hussain’s hands.
