WHERE WE STAND
New AMACOM Book Reveals The Real Truth About The State of Our Planet

NEW YORK, NY, November 2, 2007 --/WORLD-WIRE/-- AMACOM, a division of the American Management Association, has released a new book about the current shape of human welfare and the environment. In WHERE WE STAND: A Surprising Look At The Real State of Our Planet, Dr. Seymour Garte, a Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, claims that our environment is actually in far better shape than we have been led to believe.

We’ve been bombarded with bad news regarding our planet’s future. Former vice president Al Gore recently won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in bringing public attention to global warming. His documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, was designed to galvanize viewers into action with its dire outlook on our planet’s environment. With the onslaught of negatively skewed media reports on our environment, it’s no wonder that the vast majority of people believe that our environmental outlook is horrific and growing worse with each passing day. As a working scientist with over 30 years of experience in the field, Dr. Garte believes that doomsday scenarios do not motivate people to change and work towards the future, but instead lead them into apathy and ineffectiveness, while clear, demonstrable progress focuses and inspires people to help save the planet.

“This is a refreshingly honest look at the state of the Earth; not shying away from either saying where we have made progress or focusing on where more needs to be done,” said Dan Greenbaum, Vice Chair of the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Air Quality Management in the United States and former Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection. “If we are to address the issues we still face, we have to it with the optimism that we can make progress. Seymour Garte makes it clear that we have already come a long way and that we can face our future challenges—so long as we take them on—with confidence, and hope.”

Dr. Garte presents compelling evidence that the state of the environment and human welfare has in fact been improving steadily for the past three decades, with a wide range of statistics and studies from the World Health Organization, Health Effects Institute, United Nations, EPA, Worldwatch Institute, and more.

In WHERE WE STAND, Dr. Garte argues that democracy plays a crucial role as an engine for change in environmental preservation and recovery. Consider the case of communist Eastern Europe when assessing China’s current treatment of its environmental activists. Dr. Garte believes that activism is essential to effective environmental improvement and that people can and will work for the greater good. Economists tell us that people are too lazy or selfish to make sacrifices for the environment. Yet as WHERE WE STAND points out, millions of people recycle every day even though it isn’t convenient or cost-effective.

WHERE WE STAND gives new hope to those who despair the fate of the earth. Balanced and convincing, this is a book that will change the way we view the planet and the future.
